History
BlackBerry applications have been around for several years, but have increased in popularity since the launch of the 8100 Pearl. This device was the first to use RIM's newer operating system which supported java applications. Today there are thousands of applications usually built by third party developers. Some applications need to be purchased while some are given away for free. It is up to the developer.
Originally all BlackBerry applications needed to be installed via your computer using the blackberry desktop manager program. Now most applications can be downloaded over the air (OTA).
